Is it the battery, the alternator or the starter?
Three different parts can look like the same problem. Here is how they usually show up.
| Battery | Alternator (charging) | Starter | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical sign | Slow cranking, then clicking, worse in the cold | Battery light on, dimming lights, car dies while driving | Single click or silence when you turn the key |
| Often found when | The car sits for days or the battery is several years old | The battery keeps going flat even after a recharge | Battery tests fine but the engine will not turn over |
| What we test | Battery health under load | Charging output while the engine runs | Starter draw and the starting circuit |
Car battery replacement on a European car
Fitting a battery is not always a plug-and-play job. Many European cars hide the battery under a seat or in the boot, and their computers expect to be told when a new one is fitted so they charge it correctly. Cars with stop-start systems also need the right battery type, not just one that physically fits.
We test first, because a flat battery is sometimes a symptom and not the cause. If the new battery would just go flat again, we find out why before you spend the money. When a warning light is also on, a diagnostic check will show whether the battery is the whole story.

Not sure what it is?
Tell us the symptoms. We will work it out, then quote.
Most electrical problems show up first as a service-time battery test result or a dash warning. Either way, call us if the car is struggling to start.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a mechanic or an auto electrician?
For a modern European car, you want someone who can do both, because electrical faults are often tied to engine, gearbox and body control modules. We handle electrical fault-finding as part of our European specialist service, so you do not get passed between workshops.
Why does my car battery keep going flat?
Common causes are an ageing battery, a faulty alternator, or something drawing power while the car is parked. We test the battery and the charging system, then look for a drain if those are fine.
Do European cars need the new battery registered?
Many do. The car’s computer expects to be told when a new battery is fitted so it can charge it correctly, and skipping that step can shorten the new battery’s life. We check what your car needs when we quote.
What are common auto electrical faults?
Flat or failing batteries, charging system faults, starter problems, failed window, mirror and central locking motors, lighting faults, and sensor or wiring faults that trigger warning lights.
