Signs your engine needs attention
Rough running or misfire
Shaking at idle, hesitation or a flashing check engine light.
Losing oil or coolant
Drips under the car, low levels, or topping up more than before.
White or blue smoke
White can mean coolant burning; blue often points to oil getting where it should not.
Overheating
Temperature climbing or the warning light coming on. Stop safely and see cooling system repairs.
New noises
Ticking, rattling on start-up or a whine that was not there before.
Loss of power
The car feels flat, or goes into limp mode.
Overheating is its own emergency. If your temperature gauge is climbing, see our radiator and cooling system repairs page first.

Common European engine jobs
Head gasket repair
Coolant loss, overheating and white smoke are the classic signs. We confirm it with testing before anything is pulled apart, and check what caused it, because an engine that overheated once can do it again if the cause is not fixed.
Oil leaks
Valve cover gaskets, oil filter housing gaskets and seals are common sources on European engines. We find the actual source, because oil spreads and the highest wet spot is rarely the leak.
Misfires and rough running
Ignition coils, spark plugs, injectors and sensors all cause misfires. We diagnose with check engine light diagnostics before replacing parts.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my head gasket has failed?
Common signs are unexplained coolant loss, overheating, white smoke from the exhaust, and milky residue under the oil cap. A pressure test or combustion-gas test confirms it before any teardown.
Can I keep driving with a failing head gasket?
It is risky. Driving on can overheat the engine and turn a repair into a much bigger one. If the temperature is climbing or coolant is disappearing, stop and call us.
How often should a timing belt be replaced?
Follow the interval in your logbook, which varies widely by engine and is set by distance or age, whichever comes first. A timing belt that fails can wreck an engine, so do not stretch it.
Is it worth repairing an older European engine?
Often yes, but it depends on the fault and the car’s overall condition. We diagnose first and tell you honestly if the repair costs more than the car is worth.
