What is the difference between a basic service and a logbook service?
| Basic service | Logbook service | |
|---|---|---|
| Follows | A general checklist | Your manufacturer’s schedule for your exact model and interval |
| What is covered | Oil, filter and a general inspection | Everything the manufacturer lists for the interval your car has reached |
| New-car warranty | May not meet warranty requirements | Done to manufacturer requirements, so your warranty stays protected |
| Best for | Older cars with no schedule to follow | Cars under warranty, and any car you want maintained properly |
What a logbook service usually covers
The exact list depends on your make, model and interval. Your logbook or service display sets it, and we follow it.
Every service
Engine oil and filter using the approved specification, plus a safety inspection of brakes, suspension, tyres and lights.
Regular intervals
Air, cabin and fuel filters, and checks of belts, hoses and fluid levels.
Longer intervals
Spark plugs, brake fluid, coolant and transmission fluid where the schedule calls for them.
Model-specific items
Timing belts, DSG or automatic gearbox services and other items unique to your car.
What affects the cost of a logbook service?
The price depends on your car and which interval is due. A first-year service is a lighter job than a major service with plugs, fluids and a belt. The factors are:
- Make, model and engine, which set the oil capacity, filter types and parts.
- The interval your car has reached, and any model-specific items due at that stage.
- Anything the inspection turns up, such as worn brake pads, which we always check with you first.
We quote before any work starts and call you before doing anything beyond what was agreed. Worn brakes found during a service are covered on our brake pad replacement page, and a warning light on the dash goes to check engine light diagnostics. If your air conditioning is not cooling, see car aircon regas.

Frequently asked questions
Is a logbook service worth it?
Yes, especially while your car is under warranty, because a logbook service follows the manufacturer’s schedule and documents your service history. It also catches wear early, which usually costs less to fix than a breakdown.
Can anyone do a logbook service?
In Australia a qualified independent workshop can carry out your logbook service, provided the work follows the manufacturer’s schedule and uses suitable parts. You are not required to return to the dealer.
How long does a logbook service take?
It depends on the make, model and which interval your car is due for, so we confirm how long your car will be in the workshop when you book.
What is the difference between a basic service and a logbook service?
A basic service is a general oil-and-inspection job, while a logbook service follows your manufacturer’s schedule for your exact model and interval, which is what protects your warranty.
How much does a logbook service cost?
It varies with the make, model, engine and the interval that is due. We quote before any work starts, so you know the price before you commit.
