If your car is overheating right now

  1. Pull over safely

Find a safe spot and switch the engine off as soon as you can.

  2. Do not open the cap

The system is under pressure and the coolant can scald. Wait until it has fully cooled.

  3. Do not keep driving

Driving on while overheating can warp the cylinder head or blow a head gasket.

  4. Call us

We will advise on the safest way to get the car to the workshop.

Signs of a cooling system problem

Temperature gauge climbing

Or a red coolant warning on the dash.

Sweet smell or steam

Coolant leaking onto hot parts.

Puddle under the car

Green, pink, orange or blue fluid, depending on the coolant.

Low coolant warning

Topping up repeatedly means a leak somewhere.

Heater not blowing hot

Can mean low coolant or an airlock.

Overheating in traffic only

Often a cooling fan or thermostat fault.

What can fail in a European cooling system

Many European cars use plastic coolant components and, on some models, electric water pumps. These parts weaken with heat cycles and age, and often fail suddenly rather than gradually. The usual suspects are:

  • Radiators, particularly the plastic end tanks.
  • Water pumps and thermostats, including housings and seals.
  • Hoses, pipes and plastic coolant fittings.
  • Expansion tanks and caps that no longer hold pressure.
  • Cooling fans and temperature sensors.

We pressure-test the system to find the real leak, because coolant travels. If overheating has already happened, we also check for knock-on damage, which can involve engine repairs such as head gasket work.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to fix a radiator?

It depends on the car and whether the radiator can be repaired or needs replacing, plus any other parts damaged by the leak. We diagnose first and quote before any work starts.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a radiator?

Many modern European radiators have plastic tanks and are replaced rather than repaired. We tell you which applies to your car and the options for each.

How long does a radiator last?

There is no fixed lifespan, but plastic cooling parts weaken with heat cycles and age. Regular coolant services and pressure tests catch weak points before they let go.

Can I drive with a coolant leak?

Only very short distances, and only if the temperature gauge stays normal. Overheating can destroy an engine, so top up carefully when cool and get it checked quickly.
