Which cars have DSG or S tronic?
DSG is Volkswagen Group’s dual-clutch gearbox, badged S tronic on Audi. You will find it across the range of Volkswagen, Audi and Skoda models. Porsche has its own dual-clutch gearbox, PDK, which has similar servicing needs.
Wet clutch or dry clutch: why it matters
| Wet-clutch DSG | Dry-clutch DSG | |
|---|---|---|
| Clutches run | In oil, which also cools them | Without oil |
| Typically used on | Higher-torque and larger-engined cars | Smaller-engined cars |
| Servicing | Fluid and filter service at the logbook interval | Different servicing; clutch wear is the main concern |
| Common complaint | Shifts that go rough as fluid ages | Judder in stop-start traffic as the clutch wears |

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to fix a DSG?
It depends entirely on the fault, from a fluid service to a clutch or electronic repair, so we diagnose first. You get the cause and the price before any work starts.
Which DSG model years should I avoid?
There is no single bad year. Dry-clutch seven-speed units are more commonly associated with clutch wear in heavy stop-start driving, but servicing history and use matter more than the badge.
How long does a DSG clutch last?
There is no fixed figure. Clutch life depends on the gearbox type, how the car is driven and whether it has been serviced. We assess wear rather than guess from kilometres.
Can a DSG mechatronic unit be repaired?
It depends on the fault, because problems can sit in the electronics, sensors or hydraulics. We diagnose which it is and tell you honestly what is practical before you spend money.
